What’s Different About Small Business Marketing Strategies?

Small business marketing strategies are a breed of their own, and not something that can be easily or effectively spun off of the marketing plans of huge, multi-national corporations.  The plans for smaller businesses, and especially home based ventures, are relatively unique to this business type.  A correct small business marketing plan sets the tone for future success by tailoring the efforts to the specific nuances of small business.

Small Business Has Specific Needs

Even some of the most talented marketing geniuses with large companies could be extremely ill equipped to create a successful marketing plan for a smaller, home-based business.  The two are dramatically different, and in most cases a smaller business is dealing with personnel, budgetary, and other constraints that are not usually even a consideration with larger organizations.

However, this does not mean that small business marketing is relegated to unsuccessful measures!  Marketing a home based venture simply requires a different mind set, but it can be remarkably successful, creative and fulfilling.  Growing a small business with these strategies builds an understanding of the business model, in and of itself.

Make The Most Of Technology With Small Business Marketing

The task of marketing a small enterprise on the cheap is simplified dramatically with the advances in computer and Internet technologies.  Any savvy entrepreneur will want to implement technology with their marketing.  This is in part due to the fact that the Internet allows for unprecedented access to clients, as well as the ability to target a message to specific markets like never before.

Even better, it allows for these things to happen on a smaller budget than most would imagine!  This demonstrates that, in addition to the managerial and logistical benefits, computers can serve remarkably in a variety of marketing capacities.  Aside from the high tech considerations, old-school marketing ploys such as mailers and other similar items can be created for incredibly low prices with the computer, as well.

Making Sound Marketing Decisions For The Small Business

Small business owners need to view things differently than many others, but the creativity with which they approach their marketing efforts can make them even more successful in many regards.  For example, small businesses can create an impressive Internet presence that rivals a competitor one hundred times their size!  All this takes is some savvy internet assistance (or experience) and the mindset.

Creating a website that meets the goals and needs of a small business, as well as the clientele, makes all the difference in that regard.  In addition, new business owners will want to learn about marketing strategies designed to drive traffic to their company’s website.  It is truly the wave of the future in marketing.

Other online presences such as company (or related) blogs, promotions, and electronic newsletters for clients can be very effective and inexpensive to implement, as well.  Away from the Internet domain, small businesses also have the flexibility to target a niche market, and then combine efforts with a related (but non-competing) business for maximum effect.

2011 Business Growth Strategies #2: Be Distinct & Compelling

We all nod our heads when someone talks about the need to deliver distinct, compelling value to our markets.  We just assume that our value is as distinct and compelling as it was last year, or the year before or….

But is our value really distinct? And if it is distinct – is it compelling to our markets?

All too often our distinction becomes stale.  We get comfortable, resting in the laurels of our past.  That’s human nature.  We also tend to get stuck in the followers mode – watching what our competition offers, matching them.  Assuming that being equal makes us competitive.  We follow our favorite customers advice and drink our own Koolaid.

We forget to be compelling and distinct.

But we don’t know we’ve forgotten.  We still believe our “value” is distinct – that our markets are crying for our stuff.  We don’t see the gravity as we set ourselves up for discounting and price wars, for shrinking margins and reduced revenues.  We get stuck in the G’s and wonder why we’re not flying.

Distinct and compelling value is the key to business success.

Sit back, ditch your status quo and start with a clean brain.  Take some time and think about your value.  Be harsh, be realistic and above all, be honest.  Right now – ask yourself the following.

1.  How is your value distinct? Don’t just rattle off your knowns.  Stop and really THINK about it.  Take a hard look at what you believe to be your value.  Is it something that resonates with customers TODAY, or is it yesterday’s news repeated.  Dig deep and ask yourself:

Do I know that’s true? How? When did I last check it with the market at larges – not just my top best favorite customers?
Could I deliver even more distinct value? How?
Who else claims this value? How is my value distinct – and compelling to buyers? If it’s not, how do I create distinct value?

2.  Look around you. The world is filled with useless noise, some call it marketing.  Business after business is making the same claims, promising the same results.  Customers can’t tell one from another.  As the noise increases, customers are tired of listening.

That means you have to be truly distinct.  It’s the way to rise above the noise.  You have to be able to hit a prospect right between the eyes with a problem you solve that they really need solved.  Can you do that today? In 20 words or less? 10 words? 5 words?

If not – ask yourself:

How is my value distinct compared to alternative solutions? Where’s the proof?
Is that true distinction or “just a little different” kinda value?
How can I deliver better value?
How can I communicate my value to my customers?

3.  What’s compelling? Let’s say your value is distinct.  That’s not the only criteria for success.  You can have the most distinct value in the world – but if no one cares about that value you won’t be successful.  Just because you think something is cool doesn’t mean your customer does.  If value doesn’t compel buyers to part with dollars, your value doesn’t matter.  Ditch it and think again.

2011 Business Growth Strategies: #3 Get Closer to Your Markets

By: Rebel Brown
Posted: Jan 05, 2011

“Follow your customers, listen to your markets!”

That’s a mighty popular refrain from the past decade.  We all got on board with being customer-driven, market-focused and all the other buzz words.

I think we often fall short of ‘customer-driven’ – thanks to gravity.

When we truly listen to our markets – we listen to ALL of our markets.  Not just our favorite customers.  You know what I mean.  We all tend to gather input from the same group of customers – over and over again.  We go to the folks who are our friends, who we can trust to say great things – the ones who already honor our value.  After all, they understand it, right?

But what if those top favorite customers are behind the market – and you’re following their lead?

Or what if those top customers don’t represent your best opportunity going forward? What if following their lead means you miss out on the biggest opportunity yet for growth?

Just as we create Gravity from inside our business – we can also create Gravity thanks to our favorite customers.  We all do it – so don’t feel badly.  But do think differently!

Ask yourself, “What customers am I listening to for guidance? Are they the best sources of input I can find?” Chances are – you can expand your market knowledge by expanding your inputs.

I call the best sources of input your Keepers of the Truth.  They include your best customers and partners, your friendly industry experts and gurus.  All the people you already probably talk to about your business.

Now go a step further.  Chat with the real Keepers of Your Truth – beyond your buddies.  Right now, pick up the phone or schedule a meeting this week to chat with some of these folks:

The customer that’s unhappy with you. I know – they’re a pain.  They’re angry and it’s easier to avoid them than face them.  But if you want to know the truth about your value, or lack of, go talk to these folks.  Don’t just talk – listen and listen some more…
The customer who left you. Sure, they made a mistake.  You have lots of other customers who love you and your value.  Who needs the guys who left? YOU DO.  They will tell you a lot about your value – the good, the bad, and the ugly.  What you lack in value for them may be what you will lack for other customers in the near future.  So get out there and listen to what they have to say.
The prospect who never bought from you. I know, the competition outsold you, or discounted more than you could or just plain misled the customer.  But what if the prospect needed value that you don’t provide? And what if that value is what every other customer is going to need in the future? Better to go learn about it now and get a plan in place for the future.  Even if your top customers aren’t clamoring for that value yet.  So go find a few of those prospects and ask them what you were missing.  Then sit back, listen and learn.

When you get closer to your markets and their reality – you can define and deliver distinct value that is compelling to your audiences.  To find the best paths to growth, listen to a wide range of prospects and customers – with emphasis on the ones who didn’t see your value.  They can tell you more about how to win in the future than the customers who already drink your Koolaid.

The closer you are to your true markets, the closer you are to success.

Small Business Marketing It’s All About People

By: Rolando Valdes
Posted: Sep 17, 2010

Marketing is communication. Like all communication, it’s a two-way street. If your message is good, people will respond and boost sales. But implementing a bad marketing plan is far worse than someone just ignoring your message; it’s a costly way to be ignored. That is how important small business marketing is.

The most common mistake too many small business owners make is looking at a marketing strategy as an added cost. Sure, any marketing strategy will entail some expense. But a good small business marketing plan doesn’t have to be expensive. What it does need to do is reach your target market, the people you need to convince that your business is THE business that can best provide what they need.

If you need to, review your old marketing research and see if it defines your target market clearly. Just as a refresher, the basic information you will need on your target market are: age, gender, where they live, family size, income, work, lifestyle, and how large a segment of the population are they.

When you have a fairly good idea of who your target market is, try to find out how they get their information. Do they read newspapers, watch TV, or listen to the radio? Or do they rely mainly on the Internet, email or text? Knowing this will help you define the best marketing strategy to communicate with your market since each medium needs a different approach.

Discovering When To Use The Services Of A Small Business Marketing Consultant

Learn what low-cost promotional and advertising options are available. This may entail some costs. But this generally is more effective, both cost-wise and for reaching your target audience, than printing out flyers to hand out to everyone you meet.

Go personal. Actually talking to your customers, getting to know as many as you can, finding out their needs and what other products or services they may need, is always a good small business marketing strategy. This will give you direct feedback from your target market and will likely make them want to return again and again. They are also more likely to read and respond to letters and emails, and the ads you take out, as well as visit your website more often. If you use social networking, these customers are also more likely to sign up on to your page and could bring in friends and family, actually helping expand your market for you.

There are also ways to generate publicity, sometimes for free. You can submit press releases to local newspapers and radio stations on a new product or service. If you can, sponsor a community activity that people can identify with your business or host special events for your customers, like an appreciation day. People always like to feel appreciated. And you could also get additional exposure from media coverage.

Among the many other promotional ideas for small business you could try is partnering partner with one or any number of non-competitive small businesses in your area. You could offer discounts or other incentives to each other’s customers. Or you could include each other’s leaflets or business cards in the promotional material you send out. Or you could co-sponsor seminars or conferences to increase your visibility and attract advertisers.

There are many other small business marketing strategies you can use. Many of these are available on the Internet or at the many seminars offered by business organizations, advertising agencies, or manufacturers. But whatever marketing plan you use, always remember that effective small business marketing is all about getting your message out to people.
